Making Cleaning a Habit
The Maids Columbus • Oct 08, 2012

Do you love having a clean house, but have a hard time keeping it that way? You aren't alone! Some people are great at house cleaning, and some...aren't. There are steps you can take to keep your house straight every day, and it all comes down to making it a habit.

Having a clean room and a clean house makes it all worth it, though; so here are some ideas to get you started:

✔Make a list of daily tasks.

These are things that need to get done every day to keep your house looking neat. For instance, your list might include: wash dishes, take out the trash, wash a load of laundry, clear clutter, and make beds.

✔Work a little at a time.

Pick a time in the day or evening to do these tasks (they shouldn't take more than an hour once it becomes a habit), and then clean for 15-20 minutes at a time.

Give yourself a 10 minute break, and then start again. The little breaks can keep you from feeling overwhelmed.

✔Distract yourself.

Throw on your favorite music or a TV show you like to watch while you're cleaning. Warning: this might make your cleaning take longer if you're distracted easily, but if you stay on task, you'll enjoy the process a lot more.

✔Reward yourself for staying clean.

When you've finished all of your tasks for a week, reward yourself. It might be some time alone with your favorite book or a trip to the mall. A great idea is to buy small decorative items for your home, as this serves as both a reward and motivation to stay clean. A new tablecloth or a great-smelling candle are wonderful incentives. Inviting friends over is also a great reward because having company over keeps you accountable.

✔Get your family involved.

Tag team these tasks with yoru spouse, or assign your children each a chore from the list. Splitting up the tasks makes the whole process a lot faster, more efficient, and much more enjoyable.

It takes a little time to turn this into a habit, but stick with it and you'll be glad you did! If you need a good starting point, find a maid service that will help you get going.
