Dangers In Your Home
The Maids Columbus • May 14, 2012

We come home from work or from a day out with our family and friends, put our feet up, and feel relatively safe. Unfortunately, there are some real dangers found in our own homes.

The good news is, many of them can be solved by awareness and good house cleaning practices--a clean house is a healthy place to live!

Mold

One of the primary dangers in our homes is mold and mildew. Mold will grow anywhere there is moisture and a porous material. Carpets, rugs, and wood are especially susceptible.

You’ll find mold in many forms, and while black mold has been shown to be the most toxic, no mold is good for us. Mold can cause allergic reactions, breathing problems, and even depression!

If you suspect you have mold, locate it, clean it with vinegar or mold killer (safety tip: wear a protective mask), and then prevent its return by keeping moisture from building up in those areas.

Insects

Bugs like ants, flies, and cockroaches flock to places where they can find food and shelter. This often includes our houses. Depending on the insects that make it into your home, they can cause anything from structural instability in your house to difficulty breathing for you and your family.

The best way to get rid of insects is to keep your house clean. By taking away their food sources, you will force them to go somewhere else.

Blocked vents

Anytime a vent is blocked, you could be asking for trouble. Think of a clothes dryer vent: when the lint trap gets full, heat backs up into the dryer and causes a serious fire hazard.

The solution is thankfully simple: keep clutter and clothing away from air and heating vents, and clean your dryer’s lint filter and the air filter above your stove regularly.

Small items

If you have very young children or pets, small items laying around the house can pose a choking hazard. This includes small toys, decorative items, jewelry, tools, and food items.

Keep small items picked up and stored in sealed containers and out of reach of children and pets.

Keeping your home neat, clean, and clutter-free will help prevent these types of hazards. The Maids offers a wide range of housekeeping services and can help keep your home safe and clean.
