Keeping Your Grill Clean for Summer
The Maids Columbus • Jun 25, 2012

It’s summertime, and in these months, you will probably find yourself grilling out a lot more often. You keep your pots, pans, and stove clean—remember to keep your barbecue grill clean, too! Don't let a dirty, rusty grill be the reason you can't enjoy a cookout.

Since grill cleaning isn’t likely one of your standard housekeeping tasks, here are some tips to make sure your grill stays clean and safe.

Maintenance Cleaning

Every time you use your grill, you should give it a maintenance cleaning. This is a quick brush down to make sure cooked-on food particles don’t hang around for the next time you cook.

Tools: A stiff brush

  • Clean the grate. You might be used to doing this before you grill, but it’s actually better to do it afterwards. When the grill is still warm, use the brush to clean the grate. Stuck on grease and food will come off more easily when the grate is warm, and anything that falls into the grill will be cleaned before the next time.
  • Clean the inside—lid too! Take the brush to the sides and lid of the grill to get anything off that might be stuck on. Remember: if you have a charcoal grill, you’ll need to dump out the ashes first.

Heavy Cleaning

Once in a while, you should really get in there and clean your grill, scrubbing it to get it back to pristine condition.

Tools: A stiff brush, soapy water, sponge, towel

Charcoal Grill. Use the brush first and scrape off anything you can, taking time to get any stuck-on pieces loose. Then, use the sponge and the soapy water to scrub it out, cleaning every surface. Towel dry the inside or allow to air dry before using.

Gas Grill. Separate the gas from the grill and then pull and lay out the pieces of your grill. Clean each one as you can with the brush, soapy water, and sponge, then dry thoroughly with the towel (or allow to air dry for a few hours) before reassembling.

Don’t let your house cleaning stop at your back door—keep your grill as clean as your stove and you’ll always have the best-tasting summer feasts!
