Small on Space, Big on Storage
The Maids Columbus • Mar 28, 2013

If you're living in a small space, you've likely encountered the problem of having more stuff than room. That's not necessarily a bad thing—downsizing can actually be a big relief if you are already tired of mess and clutter in your life!

However, you do need some storage, so the key is to maximize the space you have. These three tips will help you get every bit of space out of your apartment or house.

Tip #1: Less is More.

The first step is to do some house cleaning: get rid of anything you don't need or love in your life. De-cluttering not only gives you more space back, it makes everything feel more clean and tidy. When you're trying to decide what can go and what you should keep, keep these questions in mind:

  • Have I used this in the last 6 months?
  • Am I really going to use this? (Not can you, but will you?)
  • Do I really love this?

If the answer to those three questions is “No,” then throw or give that item away and make more room for yourself!

Tip #2: Use Every Inch

In any floor design, there are usually a few nooks and crannies that get left on their own. They may not be big enough to often warrant your attention, but they can certainly be used for storage! If you have a corner or nook that's hard to reach, buy some containers that will fit inside of it and store things you don't often need there.

It's important when you're dealing with a small space to maximize as much of it as possible.

Tip #3: More Than a Table, Bed, or Chair

Multi-purpose furniture has grown in popularity in the past several years, and there's a good reason for it. Anytime you can use furniture for storage simultaneously, that's a big boost to your space! When you're looking for multi-purpose furniture, try these:

  • Bench or table with under-top storage.
  • Beds with drawers underneath.
  • Anything with built-in drawers.
  • A chest used as a bench or a table.

When you turn your small space into a beautiful, clean, organized environment, it will feel perfectly cozy!
