A Step By Step Guide to Repairing a Garbage Disposal
The Maids Columbus • May 12, 2014

The garbage disposal is an important kitchen appliance. It’s of great help when it comes to getting rid of food and leftovers which would otherwise pile up in your trash can. This, along with a weekly cleaning service from professionals like The Maids in Columbus, is how your kitchen runs smoothly. However, if something goes wrong with your disposal, it can be very frustrating to get rid of all that waste. If your garbage disposal is faulty, here is a step by step guide to repairing it.

Garbage Disposal is Silent When Turned On

  • Look at the bottom of your garbage disposal and press the reset button. Try your disposal to check if it works.
  • If the reset button didn’t work, check the circuit breaker to see if it needs to be reset. If this is the case, switch the circuit breaker off and on, and then try the garbage disposal again.
  • If the problem is not with the circuit breaker, look for the switch that powers your garbage disposal. The switch can either be on a wall or just below the sink. A faulty switch could be the cause of the problems. Locate the circuit breaker on your service panel and then turn it off. If the switch is faulty, replace it and turn power back on. Test the disposal.
  • If all the above steps don't work, then you may need to replace the entire garbage disposal system.

Garbage Disposal Makes Humming Noise, but Won’t Run

  • Switch off the circuit-breaker that powers the disposal.
  • Insert an offset wrench into the fly-wheel, turning hole located at the bottom of your disposal.
  • Turn the wrench to loosen anything lodged in your disposal or fly-wheel. You should start to feel the fly-wheel turn more easily.
  • If you can’t get a proper offset wrench, get a wooden handle to dislodge the stuck flywheel or impeller. You can use some grease to help loosen the flywheel.
  • Turn power back on and then push the reset button.
  • Turn the water on and then flip the disposal switch on and off. This will set the spinning wheel and clean all the dislodged objects down the drain.
