Natural Remedies for the Common Cold
The Maids Columbus • Nov 21, 2014

A runny nose and sore throat are no fun - but fear not – most of the signs of common cold are usually harmless. There are many natural remedies that will help minimize your time spent suffering, and you will likely find most of them sitting quiet in your kitchen. Here are our top 3 natural cold remedies.

Drink Warm Fluids

Drinking warm fluids can provide a soothing effect on a dry throat. You can try herbal teas like chamomile, peppermint, ginger and honey plus lemon with warm water. Your mom's chicken soup may also help. As the warmth goes down your sore throat, it will help loosen mucus, making it much easier to cough out. Also, avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee and cola, which can act as a diuretic and may lead to dehydration.

Neti Pots

Making homemade nasal spray is very simple and s free of chemical substances. Mix 1/4 tsp of salt, 1/4 tsp of baking soda and 8 oz .of warm water. Use a neti pot to flush out your nasal cavities. Close one nostril and gently squirt the warm water through your other nostril while leaning your head a bit forward. This may feel weird in the beginning, but the warm and salty water will help remove the stuffiness.

Steam

Hot water vapors will help hydrate your sore throat and nasal cavities. Heat up water in a pot and very carefully keep your head over the pot with a clean towel covering your entire head. Do not get too close since hot water vapors can cause burns. Now close the eyes and breathe in deeply, letting the steam get into your nose and mouth. You can also add 2 drops of peppermint oil to the water.
